The Monument to Academician B. Shirendev, located in Ulaanbaatar, serves as a significant historical marker of the intellectual and social contributions made by one of Mongolia’s most prominent scholars and statesmen.
Established in 2012, the plaque commemorates the life and legacy of Bazaryn Shirendev (1912 - 2001), who was a Hero of Labor of Mongolia, a recipient of the State Prize, and a Distinguished Figure in Science.
The monument features inscriptions detailing his extensive academic journey, including his role as the first president of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. It highlights his defense of his doctoral dissertation in historical sciences at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR between 1957 and 1960, specifically focusing on the history of Mongolia during the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.
Beyond its physical presence, the plaque remains a living symbol of Mongolian academic resilience and national pride, marking a transition from the early establishment of the Mongolian People's Republic to its modern scientific era. It acknowledges his international standing as an honorary member of the Academies of Sciences in Hungary, the USSR, Bulgaria, the GDR, Czechoslovakia, and Poland, as well as an honorary doctor of the University of Leeds in England.
Today, it stands as both a testament to history and a symbol of intellectual excellence, reminding visitors of the enduring efforts required to build a nation’s scientific foundation and maintain its cultural and historical identity through rigorous scholarship and leadership.
