The National Academic Drama Theatre traces its origins to the State Central Theatre, founded in 1931, making it one of the foundations of Mongolia's modern theatrical tradition.

In 1963, the former State Musical Drama Theatre was reorganized into two independent institutions: the State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet and the State Academic Drama Theatre, allowing each to specialize in its own artistic discipline.
