The Kharakhorum Museum is a specialized archaeological facility located in the Orkhon Valley, near the Erdene Zuu Monastery. It was established in 2011 to preserve and exhibit findings from the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire.

  • Exhibits: The museum is organized chronologically, covering the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and the peak of the Mongol Empire. It houses over 3,000 artifacts, including stone inscriptions, ancient steles, and ornaments recovered from regional excavations.

  • The City Model: A central feature of the museum is a detailed scale reconstruction of the city of Kharakhorum. This model illustrates the administrative and religious quarters as they existed during the reign of the Great Khans, based on historical descriptions and archaeological data.

  • Artifacts: The collection includes iron tools, bronze mirrors, traditional nomadic pottery, and a significant display of over 300 imperial coins. It also features a copy of Güyük Khan’s 1246 letter to the Pope and various religious sculptures.

  • Scientific Role: The facility serves as a research hub for international archaeologists studying the urban development of ancient nomadic empires and the history of the Silk Road in Central Asia.
