Traveling through Ulaanbaatar can be chaotic, but mastering the public bus system is the smartest and most affordable way to explore Mongolia’s capital. With a fleet of over 1,200 buses operated by 21 companies, the network covers the entire city through 79 distinct routes, connecting the bustling city center with the suburban Ger districts.

🕒 Operating Hours & Reliability

Public transport in Ulaanbaatar runs daily, usually from 05:30 AM to 10:00 PM, though some major main lines run slightly later.

  • Reliability: Buses are frequent (departing every 5–15 minutes on main routes).

  • Peak Hours (Avoid if possible): Traffic in UB is notorious. Buses get extremely crowded and stuck in traffic during rush hours:

    • Morning: 7:00 AM – 9:30 AM

    • Evening: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM

  • These hours are orientative as the heavy traffic of Ulaanbaatar may extend these hours.

Pro Tip: If you travel during rush hour, pick a spot near the door immediately after boarding, or you might find it impossible to get off at your stop due to the crowd.



💳 The U-Money Card: Your Ticket to Ride

Since 2016, cash is NOT accepted on any public bus. You must purchase a contactless smart card called U-Money.

  • Bus Fare: 1,000 MNT ($0.30 USD) per trip.

  • Trolleybus Fare: 500 MNT per trip.

  • Children: discounted rates apply (requires a special child card, usually for residents).

The "Free Transfer" Rule

You can transfer between buses for FREE under these conditions:

  1. You must tap your card both when entering AND when exiting.

  2. The transfer must occur within 30 minutes of your first trip.

  3. Valid for up to 4 transfers per day.

🚶 Step-by-Step: How to Use the Bus

  1. Board at the Front: Always enter through the front door near the driver.

  2. Tap In: Place your U-Money card on the reader located next to the driver until it beeps. The screen will show your remaining balance.

  3. Find a Seat (or Hold On): UB drivers can be aggressive with braking. Always hold a handrail if standing.

  4. Monitor Your Route: Use Google Maps to track your blue dot so you know when your stop is approaching.

  5. Exit at the Back: Use the middle or rear doors to exit.

  6. Tap Out: Crucial! Tap your card on the reader near the exit door. If you don't tap out, you won't get the free transfer for your next bus.

  • Offer Your Seat: It is a strict social rule in Mongolia to give up your seat to elderly people, pregnant women, or small children. If you don't, you may be publicly scolded by locals!


✈️ Airport Connection

For travelers heading to or from Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN), standard city buses do not go there. You must look for the Special Airport Shuttle Buses (often labeled UBUS), which are more expensive (approx. 10,000 - 20,000 MNT) but provide direct service to the city center.
